Hospital hygiene 2009

The Health Information and Quality Authority continues to monitor compliance with National Hygiene Services Quality Standards. This takes the form of ongoing unannounced visits to randomly selected acute hospitals, with this series of inspections focusing specifically on the day to day delivery of hygiene services, particularly in the areas of cleanliness, hand hygiene and waste and linen management practices.

Conducted by the Authority's assessors, the visits include inspecting cleanliness and hygiene practices in the clinical areas as well as talking to staff, managers, patients and visitors.

Following each visit, a detailed report is provided to each hospital to inform them of areas of strength and areas for further improvement. The report, which is published on our website, also provides patients and the public with detailed information on the hygiene services in each hospital.

The findings reflect a point in time and may not reflect the fluctuations in the quality of hygiene services; however they do provide a snapshot of these services in the hospitals as seen on the day of the assessment.

Maintaining good standards in hygiene services is fundamental to the provision of high quality safe care for patient. As the independent Authority setting these standards and driving improvements and accountability across Ireland’s health and social care services, the Health Information and Quality Authority is monitoring compliance on behalf of patients to ensure high standards remain a priority.

In May 2009, the Authority published the National Standards for the Prevention and Control of Healthcare Associated Infections. These new national standards focus on a broader set of issues than hygiene; they represent a critical component in supporting the ongoing requirement to prevent and control healthcare associated infections in Ireland. From 1 June 2010 acute hospitals will be monitored against these standards only.

Pending implementation of the new standards in 2010, the Authority is continuing to monitor compliance with the National Hygiene Services Quality Standards.

Hospital hygiene 2008

The Hygiene Services Quality Review is the most comprehensive ever undertaken in Ireland. The unannounced visits, which were conducted by the Authority's assessors, focused on Corporate Management, Service Delivery and included interviews with staff, managers, patients and visitors. The Review sets a new benchmark for hospitals to aim for on behalf of their patients. Individual detailed reports have been provided to each hospital to inform them of areas of strength and areas for further improvement.

As the Independent Authority setting the highest standards and driving improvements and accountability across Ireland’s Health and Social Care Services, the Health Information and Quality Authority is adamant that patients should receive the uppermost standards in hospital hygiene and that the level of healthcare associated infections be addressed as a key priority.
