An introduction to SNOMED CT Workshop

The Authority hosted a day long workshop on SNOMED CT at its head office in Mahon, Cork on Wednesday 27 January 2010. David Markwell, an international expert in health informatics gave an introductory course on SNOMED CT, covering the following topics:

  • Introduction - What is SNOMED & Content Overview
  • Clinical Terminology Requirements – Electronic Health Record requirements for a standard terminology
  • Building Blocks of SNOMED CT – Concepts, Descriptions and Relationships
  • The SNOMED CT Concept Model
  • Localization features of SNOMED CT – Extensions, Subsets and Reference Sets
  • Practical examples of SNOMED CT using CliniClue

What is SNOMED CT?
SNOMED CT (Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine-Clinical Terms) is considered to be the most comprehensive clinical healthcare terminology in the world. The delivery of a standard clinical language for use across health information systems can help to significantly improve the quality and safety of healthcare. It is central to facilitating communication and interoperability in electronic health data exchange.

2009 Workshops

The Health Information Directorate of the Authority hosted three workshops in 2009 which included topics on health information standards, electronic health records (EHRs) and SNOMED CT. These workshops were targeted at providing information on the role of health information standards in increasing patient safety and quality of care.

An introduction to SNOMED CT Workshop

The Authority hosted a half day workshop in conjunction with the Health Informatics Society of Ireland at their annual conference on Wednesday 18 November 2009. The following topics were covered:

  • What is SNOMED & Content Overview
  • Clinical Terminology Requirements – Electronic Health Record requirements for a standard terminology
  • Building Blocks of SNOMED CT – Concepts, Descriptions and Relationships
  • The SNOMED CT Concept Model
  • Localization features of SNOMED CT – Extensions, Subsets and Reference Sets

Electronic Health Records Workshop

The Authority hosted a half-day consultation workshop on Friday 23 October 2009, at the National Museum of Ireland, Collins Barracks, Dublin 7 to consult with key experts in the area of Electronic Health Records (EHRs).

Dr Dipak Kalra, Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Centre for Health Informatics at University College London and Professor Jane Grimson, Director of Health Information at the Authority gave presentations followed by breakout sessions where attendees were given the opportunity to voice their views on this topic.

Health Information Standards Workshop

The Authority hosted a half-day workshop on Tuesday 30 June 2009, at the National Museum of Ireland, Collins Barracks, Dublin 7 to introduce participants on how health information standards can be used as a framework to inform practice development.

Dr Tony Shannon, an international expert in health informatics and Clinical Lead of the Clinical Content Service, NHS Connecting for Health and Ms Pamela Henry, Lecturer in Health Informatics, Dublin City University gave presentations on this topic.
