Colorectal cancer Screening Programme Health Technology Assessment

Health Technology Assessment (HTA) of a population-based colorectal cancer screening programme in Ireland

An average of 2040 new cases of colorectal cancer were diagnosed each year during the period 2002 and 2005, with an average of 925 deaths occurring each year during the same period.

Colorectal cancer is the second most frequently diagnosed cancer in both men and women in Ireland, with Ireland having the highest mortality rates for colorectal cancer for men in Western Europe. By 2020 it is estimated that the number of new cases diagnosed each year in Ireland will have increased by 79% in men and 56% in women.

Following a request from the National Cancer Screening Service Board, the Authority agreed to carry out a HTA of a population-based colorectal cancer screening programme in Ireland.

The purpose of the HTA was to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of various options for a population-based colorectal cancer screening programme in Ireland, and also to estimate the resource requirements and health outcomes that would result in the first decade following the implementation of such a programme.

The final report has been submitted to the Minister for Health and Children and the National Cancer Screening Service Board. A decision on the implementation of population-based colorectal cancer screening programme will be made directly by the Minister following due consideration.
