Decision making

When creating our standards we follow a standardised process which includes the following steps:

  • research and review international best practice
  • set up an Expert Advisory Group
  • consult with stakeholders and experts hold
  • publish a draft version of all our standards and invite people to comment and feedback on them
  • finalise the standards and recommend them to the Minister for adoption.

Health Information

The ability to share health information is a fundamental pre-requisite to the development of a timely, comprehensive, coordinated and above all safe healthcare system.

Best practice internationally is to adopt a standards-based approach which insofar as is possible uses international standards with limited national customisation. This applies equally to standards for key performance indicators, information governance and minimum data sets as well as for messaging and electronic healthcare records standards.

Health Technology Assessments

As with the creation of our standards when developing HTA’s we set up Expert Advisory Groups and consult with people who work in the field and those who implement the procedures. The outcome then enables policy makers to make informed decisions.

How do we gather information?

Surveys, forums, workshops, consultations.
