The Health Information and Quality Authority announced today that it is to undertake an investigation into the quality and safety of services and supporting arrangements provided by the Health Service Executive (HSE) at Mallow General Hospital.

The Health Information and Quality Authority today published a comprehensive catalogue of health information sources. The catalogue will increase awareness about the purpose and content of these sources and how the data can be accessed. The publication of the catalogue will also identify any gaps or inconsistencies in health information.

24 - June - 10. Health Technology Assessment of the use of prion filters to reduce the risk of variant CJD transmission from transfusion of red cell concentrates in Ireland
Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD) is a rare and fatal degenerative disorder of the human nervous system that is caused by infectious prion particles. Between 1999 and 2006 four patients were diagnosed with vCJD in Ireland. Worldwide, 217 cases have been identified, of which 170 were in the UK.


8 - June - 10. World experts gather to discuss value for money in healthcare
The biggest conference in the world on health technology assessment is on in Ireland this week. 1,206 delegates from 53 countries are attending the largest gathering of experts to look at providing better value for money in healthcare.

The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) and the Department of Health and Children are making a small number of bursaries available to participants from the Republic of Ireland to attend the Health Technology Assessment International 2010 (HTAi) conference taking place in the RDS in Dublin from 6 – 9 June 2010.

A major international health conference is taking place in Dublin from 6 to 9 June. With more than 1,000 experts and delegates expected to attend from 44 countries, the conference will be a significant boost to the Irish economy, bringing in an estimated €1.6 million.

The World Health Organization (WHO) in their SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands annual initiative activities, are again issuing a global call to action inviting health-care workers, facilities and organisations throughout the world to actively campaign for improved hand hygiene at the point of care to reduce health care-associated infections and to demonstrate their commitment to this priority global movement.

The delivery of safer patient care in Ireland moved forward today with the publication of standards to increase the reliability and safety of electronic communication between GPs and healthcare services.


31 - March - 10. Nursing home registration cancelled
Pursuant to Sections 59 and 60 of the Health Act 2007, an Interim Order was made by the District Court in Bray Co. Wicklow on 29 March 2010 cancelling the registration of Glenbervie Nursing Home, Sidmonton Road, Bray Co. Wicklow as a designated centre under part 8 of the Health Act 2007, with effect from 9.00am on 30 March 2010. In accordance with Section 64 of the Health Act 2007 the HSE was directed to take charge of the Nursing Home from such time and to make alternative arrangements for the residents of the Nursing Home as soon as practicable. The matter is still before the Courts and at this time HIQA will not be making any public comment or statements until all legal proceedings have concluded.

The evaluation examined the feasibility of introducing such a programme in Ireland within existing resources.
