National Patient Experience Survey
HIQA, HSE, Department of Health
2017
The overall purpose and objective of the National Patient Experience Survey is to engage with and understand the experience of patients and use this feedback to inform the future development, planning, design and delivery of improved patient-centred care.
National.
The National Patient Experience Survey Programme is the first of its kind in Ireland. It gives patients an opportunity to describe their experiences during their stay in hospital and this information will be used to improve the health service.
The target population for the survey includes all patients aged 18 and over, who have spent a minimum of 24 hours in a public acute hospital, have been discharged during a specific month and who hold a postal address in the Republic of Ireland.
The National Patient Experience Survey gathers information on experiences of care, as patients progress through the hospital system. Information is gathered on the following themes: admission to hospital, the ward environment, care and treatment, interaction with staff and the discharge process. Additional information is gathered on patient demographics (self-reported).
1. Public acute HSE and voluntary hospitals draw the survey sample and provide patient information to a survey contractor.
2. Eligible participants provide information on their hospital experience by completing the survey questionnaire.
Information on patient experience is collected through a structured survey questionnaire. The survey asks 58 structured tick-box questions as well as three open-ended questions for comments. The survey can be completed online or by returning the questionnaire via freepost.
