One of HIQA's key objectives is to develop coherent person-centred standards for health and social care services, and given the current importance and the challenges in reducing Healthcare Associated Infections (HCAIs), HIQA identified the need to develop National Standards for the Prevention and Control of Healthcare Associated Infections as one of its priority areas.

Preventing and controlling HCAIs is not just a priority for Ireland, it is a global challenge. Considerable research and improvement initiatives have been undertaken nationally and internationally to reduce the level of HCAIs and contribute to the safety and quality of care for patients.
