HIQA publishes three inspection reports for St Laurence Cheshire, The Cheshire Foundation in Ireland

Date of publication:

On 28 July 2017, the Health information and Quality Authority (HIQA) cancelled the registration of The Cheshire Foundation in Ireland as registered provider for St Laurence Cheshire centre in Cork and another organisation took over the operation of the centre.

Today HIQA has published the three remaining unpublished reports for this centre while The Cheshire Foundation in Ireland was the provider.

The provider had failed to take effective action following repeated findings during a series of inspections of poor safeguarding arrangements for residents, poor healthcare of residents and an overall poor quality of care and support for residents. HIQA issued the provider with a notice of decision to cancel the registration of the centre on 25 November 2016.

The provider appealed the decision to cancel the registration of the centre to the district court, as per the Health Act 2007.

Due to concerns for the safety and wellbeing of residents, HIQA considered the immediate cancelation of the registration. However, the Health Service Executive (HSE), with the assistance of another provider and with the consent of The Cheshire Foundation in Ireland, put measures in place to address the immediate risks to residents. On this basis, HIQA agreed to requests for the deferral of a court hearing while another organisation was identified to operate the centre.

On 28 July 2017, The Cheshire Foundation in Ireland withdrew their appeal to the district court and the decision of HIQA to cancel the registration took effect. On the same day, another organisation was granted registration of the centre.
