Older people’s publication statement 03 February 2017

Date of publication:

The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has published 17 inspection reports on residential settings for older people. HIQA independently monitors designated centres for older people for compliance with Health Act (2017) Regulations and the National Standards for Residential Care Settings for Older People in Ireland, 2016 to ensure that residents in nursing homes are safe and well looked after.

Seven reports relate to dementia care thematic inspections; three reports refer to 18-outcome announced registration inspections; three are 10-outcome inspections, and four are either follow-up or specific-issue inspections.

Evidence of good practice and compliance with the regulations and standards was found in 11 centres. These reports show that residents’ needs were met and the care delivered to residents was safe in these centres.

Inspectors found evidence of non-compliance in six centres. Residents’ needs were not always met in these centres. Areas of non-compliance identified included health and social care needs, residents' rights, dignity and consultation, governance and management, and safeguarding and safety.
