Today, the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has published 16 inspection reports on residential centres for older people. HIQA independently monitors designated centres for older people for compliance with the Health Act (2007) Regulations and the National Standards for Residential Care Settings for Older People in Ireland, 2016, to ensure that the older people living in nursing homes are safe and well looked after.

Six reports refer to 18-outcome inspections, four reports are 10-outcome inspections and five reports refer to dementia care thematic inspections, while the remaining report relates to an inspection which looked at 12-outcomes.

Inspectors found evidence of good practice and compliance with the regulations and standards in ten centres. These ten inspection reports show that residents’ needs were being met and the care delivered was safe, in line with the National Standards and regulations.

However, six reports found evidence of non-compliance. In these six centres, residents’ needs were not always being met and non-compliances were identified by inspectors in areas including safeguarding and safety, and safe and suitable premises.
