The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has published 20 inspection reports on residential settings for older people. HIQA independently monitors designated centres for older people for compliance with Health Act (2017) Regulations and the National Standards for Residential Care Settings for Older People in Ireland, 2016, to ensure that residents in nursing homes are safe and well looked after.

Seven reports relate to dementia care thematic inspections; six reports refer to 18-outcome announced registration inspections; four are 10-outcome inspections, and three are either follow-up or specific-issue inspections.

Evidence of good practice and compliance with the regulations and standards was found in 14 centres. These reports show that residents’ needs were met and the care delivered to residents was safe in these centres.

Six reports for five centres found evidence of non-compliance. Two of these reports are for one centre, which required a follow-up inspection to assess a specific risk. Residents’ needs were not always met in the five centres where there was evidence of non-compliance. Areas of non-compliance identified included health and safety and risk management, health and social care needs, governance and management, safeguarding and safety, and residents' rights, dignity and consultation.
