Today, the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has published 18 inspection reports on residential centres for older people.

HIQA independently monitors designated centres for older people for compliance with the Health Act (2007) Regulations and the National Standards for Residential Care Settings for Older People in Ireland, 2016, to ensure that the people living in the service receive high quality and safe care.  

Four reports refer to 18-outcome inspections, four reports are 10-outcome inspections, eight reports refer to dementia care thematic inspections, while the remaining reports relates to a follow-up inspection and a single specific issue inspection.

Evidence of good practice and compliance with the regulations and standards was found in 13 centres. These 13 inspection reports show that residents’ needs were being met in line with the National Standards and regulations.

However, five reports found evidence of non-compliance. In these five centres, residents’ needs were not always being met and non-compliances were identified by inspectors in areas such as safeguarding and safety, safe and suitable premises, health and social care needs, medication management and rights, dignity and consultation.
