Today, the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has published 14 inspection reports on residential centres for older people.

HIQA independently monitors designated centres for older people for compliance with the Health Act (2007) Regulations and the National Standards for Residential Care Settings for Older People in Ireland, 2016, to ensure that the people living in these services receive high-quality and safe care.  

Three reports refer to an inspection of all 18 outcomes to inform a registration decision, four reports are 10-outcome inspections, six reports refer to dementia care thematic inspections, and one report is an inspection of a single specific issue.

Evidence of good practice and compliance with the regulations and standards was found in seven centres. These eight inspection reports show that residents’ needs were being met in line with the National Standards and regulations.

However, seven reports found evidence of non-compliance. In these seven centres, residents’ needs were not always being met and non-compliances were identified by inspectors in areas such as safe and suitable premises, medication management, risk management, health and safety, and residents’ rights, dignity and consultation.
