Today, the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has published 14 inspection reports on residential centres for older people.

HIQA independently monitors designated centres for older people for compliance with the Health Act (2007) Regulations and the National Standards for Residential Care Settings for Older People in Ireland, 2016, to ensure that the people living in the service receive high quality and safe care.   

One report refers to an 18-outcome inspection, six reports are 10-outcome inspections, five reports refer to dementia care thematic inspections, while the remaining reports relate to a follow-up inspection and a single specific issue inspection.  

Evidence of good practice and compliance with the regulations and standards was found in nine centres. These nine inspection reports show that residents’ needs were being met in line with the National Standards and regulations.

However, five reports found evidence of non-compliance. In these five centres, residents’ needs were not always being met and non-compliances were identified by inspectors in areas such as government and management, safeguarding and safety, suitable staffing and rights, dignity and consultation.
