Health Information and Quality Authority to review pathology services at University College Hospital Galway

Date of publication:

The Health Information and Quality Authority is to undertake an independent review of pathology services at University Hospital Galway (UHG). The review is being undertaken following the mis-diagnosis of cancer in a private patient receiving private hospital care in the mid-west.

The review is being conducted to ascertain what happened in the case of this lady and it will also review as many additional cases as are required, in order to reassure women with symptomatic breast disease whose pathology specimens were examined in UHG over the relevant time period that they have been correctly diagnosed. The Authority will be working closely with UHG to ensure that other women whose cases are being reviewed are communicated with promptly and appropriately.

The Authority will also be working with the Minister in her examination of the most effective and appropriate mechanism for the investigation into all aspects of this lady’s care. This will ensure that the Authority’s independent review of pathology services in UHG and the investigation being undertaken on behalf of the Minister are co-ordinated so that the care received by this lady is comprehensively and rigorously investigated.

The terms of reference and the investigation team undertaking the Health Information and Quality Authority’s Review of Pathology Services at University Hospital Galway will be published in the near future. The Authority is also committed to publishing the report and recommendations of its review.

Ends.
