Older people’s publication statement 07 April 2017

Date of publication:

The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has today published 17 inspection reports on residential settings for older people. HIQA independently monitors designated centres for older people for compliance with Health Act (2007) Regulations and the National Standards for Residential Care Settings for Older People in Ireland, 2016, to ensure that residents in nursing homes are safe and well looked after.

Ten reports refer to 18-outcome announced registration inspections, three are 10-outcome inspections and four reports relate to dementia care thematic inspections.

Evidence of good practice and compliance with the regulations and standards was found in 11 centres. These 11 inspection reports show that residents’ needs were being met in line with the National Standards and regulations.

However, evidence of non-compliance was found in six centres. These inspections found that residents’ needs were not always met. Inspectors identified non-compliances in these centres in areas such as health and safety and risk management, residents' rights, dignity and consultation, safe and suitable premises, governance and management, and safeguarding.
