Older people’s publication statement 12 May 2017

Date of publication:

Today, the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has published 17 inspection reports on residential centres for older people. HIQA independently monitors designated centres for older people for compliance with Health Act (2007) Regulations and the National Standards for Residential Care Settings for Older People in Ireland, 2016 to ensure that the health, wellbeing and quality of life of people in residential care is promoted and protected.

Eight reports refer to 10-outcome inspections, four are 18-outcome announced registration inspections, four relate to a follow-up inspection carried out to review actions required from a previous inspection, and one report refers to a dementia care thematic inspection.

Evidence of good practice and compliance with the regulations and standards was found in 10 centres. These 10 inspection reports show that residents’ needs were met and the care delivered was safe, in line with the National Standards and Regulations.

However, evidence of non-compliance was found in seven centres. Residents’ needs were not always met in these centres where there was evidence of non-compliance. Inspectors identified non-compliances in these centres in areas such as governance and management, complaints management, documentation, safeguarding, suitable staffing, health and safety and risk management.
