Older people's publication statement 14 July 2017

Date of publication:

Today, the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has published 18 inspection reports on residential centres for older people. HIQA independently monitors designated centres for older people for compliance with the Health Act (2007) Regulations and the National Standards for Residential Care Settings for Older People in Ireland, 2016, to ensure that older people living in nursing homes are safe and well looked after.

Two reports refer to 18-outcome inspections, 10 reports are 10-outcome inspections, four reports refer to dementia care thematic inspections, while the remaining two reports relates to follow-up inspections.

Evidence of good practice and compliance with the regulations and standards was found in 15 centres. These 15 inspection reports show that residents’ needs were being met and the care delivered was safe, in line with the National Standards and regulations.

However, three reports found evidence of non-compliance. In these three centres, residents’ needs were not always being met and non-compliances were identified by inspectors in areas including documentation, risk management, health and safety, premises, health and social care needs, and rights, dignity and consultation. One of these centres is subject to court proceedings and HIQA is monitoring the provider’s implementation of an action plan to address the regulatory non-compliances.
