Older people's publication statement 19 July 2017

Date of publication:

Today, the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has published 16 inspection reports on residential centres for older people. HIQA independently monitors designated centres for older people for compliance with the Health Act (2007) Regulations and the National Standards for Residential Care Settings for Older People in Ireland, 2016, to ensure that older people living in nursing homes are safe and well looked after.

One report is an announced inspection of all 18 outcomes to inform a registration decision, 10 reports are 10-outcome inspections, and five reports relate to dementia care thematic inspections.

Inspections in nine centres found evidence of good practice and compliance with the regulations and standards. These nine inspection reports show that residents’ needs were being met and the care delivered was safe, in line with the National Standards and regulations.

However, evidence of non-compliance was found in seven centres. In these seven reports, residents’ needs were not always being met and non-compliances were identified by inspectors in areas such as: suitable staffing; safe and suitable premises; documentation; health and safety and risk management; residents’ rights, dignity and consultation; and governance and management.
