Today, the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has published 17 inspection reports on residential centres for older people.

HIQA independently monitors designated centres for older people for compliance with the Health Act (2007) Regulations and the National Standards for Residential Care Settings for Older People in Ireland, 2016, to ensure that the people living in these services receive high-quality and safe care. 

Five reports refer to 18-outcome inspections, seven reports are 10-outcome inspections, two reports refer to dementia care thematic inspections, two reports are follow-up inspections and one report relates to a single specific-issue.

Evidence of good practice and compliance with the regulations and standards was found in nine centres. These nine inspection reports show that residents’ needs were being met in line with the National Standards and regulations.

However, eight reports found evidence of non-compliance. In these eight centres, residents’ needs were not always being met and non-compliances were identified by inspectors in areas such as safe and suitable premises, medication management, risk management, health and safety, and residents’ rights, dignity and consultation.
