Older people's publication statement 26 January 2017

Date of publication:

The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has published 16 inspection reports on residential settings for older people. HIQA independently monitors designated centres for older people for compliance with Health Act (2017) Regulations and the National Standards for Residential Care Settings for Older People in Ireland, 2016 to ensure that residents in nursing homes are safe and well looked after.

Six reports refer to 18-outcome announced registration inspections; five reports relate to dementia care thematic inspections; four are 10-outcome inspections, and one is a follow-up inspection. Evidence of good practice and compliance with the regulations and standards was found in eight centres.

However, significant evidence of non-compliance was found in eight centres. Inspectors found that these centres were not operating in compliance with the regulations or standards, and were not meeting the needs of residents. Major non-compliance was found in areas including: safeguarding and safety, health and safety and Risk management, suitable staffing, safe and suitable premises, notification of incidents, governance and management, and documentation to be kept at a centre.
