Older people's publication statement 6 September 2017

Date of publication:

Today, the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has published 20 inspection reports on residential centres for older people. HIQA independently monitors designated centres for older people for compliance with the Health Act (2007) Regulations and the National Standards for Residential Care Settings for Older People in Ireland, 2016, to ensure that the older people living in nursing homes are safe and well looked after.

Four reports refer to 18-outcome inspections, eight reports are 10-outcome inspections, six reports refer to dementia care thematic inspections, while the remaining reports relate to a single issue inspection and a follow-up inspection.

Inspectors found evidence of good practice and compliance with the regulations and standards in 12 centres. These 12 inspection reports show that residents’ needs were being met and the care delivered was safe, in line with the National Standards and regulations.

However, eight reports found evidence of non-compliance. In these eight centres, residents’ needs were not always being met and non-compliances were identified by inspectors in areas including health and safety and risk management, safe and suitable premises, medication management, and residents’ rights, dignity and consultation.
