The Regulation Handbook: A guide for providers and staff of designated centres is a comprehensive overview of how we regulate. The handbook tells the story of regulation from the first receipt of information (application to register) to our enforcement powers. Since the previous update of this handbook in January 2024, there have been some significant legislative developments which will impact on the regulation of designated centres. The Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) (No. 2) Act 2024 and the Patient Safety (Notifiable Incidents and Open Disclosure) Act 2023 have introduced a number of new powers for the Chief Inspector, which are set out in the handbook. It should be used in conjunction with our other guidance to guide providers and staff in the provision of services.
