Health statistics related to acute and maternity public hospital activity and mortality based on anonymised data sources are in scope. Private hospital activity is out of scope. Ancillary data on resourcing, financing, staff and facilities, and identifiable health data are out of scope. Primary care data is also out of scope.

Health Statistics is a collection of aggregated tables of health-related data produced by the Department of Health focused primarily on morbidity and mortality.

Data collection methodology

Data is provided annually to our Statistics and Analytics Unit.

Clinical coding scheme

Mortality data is classified using the Eurostat 65 Cause of Death Shortlist. Morbidity data is classified using the International Shortlist for Hospital Morbidity Tabulation (ISHMT) – Eurostat / OECD / WHO. (Version 2008-11-10) for diagnoses and the ICD-10-AM / ACHI Procedure Shortlist for procedures.

Size of national collection

On average, 1.1 million records are added to the collection annually.

Health Statistics are updated quarterly on data.cso.ie.
